Position Title (Role): Program and Events Committee Chair
Location: Tucson, AZ (various, in-person and remote locations)
Time Commitment and Schedule: 3 hours per week
Function: Governance and Administration
Family: Strategic Committee Leadership
Reports to: President

Job Level: Strategic
Functional Knowledge Leads by fostering collaboration across disciplines, communicating objectives, resolving conflicts, and inviting diverse perspectives. Sets and operationalizes financial plans, utilizes shared technologies, adheres to deadlines, and applies process knowledge to guide the committee’s work from strategy to action.
Problem Solving and Complexity
  • Identifies operational and strategic issues within the committee(s), and board and gathers information to determine root cause(s)
  • Resolves operational and strategic problems across the organization and the community.
  • Proactively seeks and identifies opportunities for long-term goal setting and achievement for committees and teams.
Autonomy and Decision-Making
  • Establishes, innovates, and improves policies and procedures impacting the organization and stakeholders. Has the authority to lead the modification of processes and procedures to address high-impact issues or concerns.
  • Responsible for decision-making related to achieving long-term goals and ensuring alignment with overall vision.
  • Responsible for people management.
  • Includes significant fiscal responsibilities such as strategic budget management, vendor selections, and purchasing decisions.
Scope and Impact
  • Directs program and events impact across the entire organization.
  • Accountable for designing and implementing the Program and Events Committee strategy and long-term goals.

  • Direct and support the People Leader positions: Sub-Committee Chair(s).
  • Direct and support the Individual Contributor positions: committee member roles.
  • Provides overall guidance and direction for committee members.

Position Purpose: This role serves as a Governance-level leader within SAVMA, responsible for both strategic oversight and operational coordination of the committee’s work. Steward SAVMA’s mission, policies, and strategic plan, ensuring the committee functions as an extension of the Board and carries out the work of the association. Provide governance leadership—setting direction, ensuring accountability, and maintaining continuity—while also overseeing the operational execution of recruiting, engaging, supporting, and leading committee members.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead the committee in carrying out strategic plan actions assigned to this functional area; Ensure committee work aligns with SAVMA’s mission, policies, & BOD directives.
  • Establish & maintain committee procedures, documentation, and continuity systems.
  • Recruit, orient, and support committee members, cultivating future leaders.
  • Prepare & deliver reports to the BOD, representing committee work and needs.
  • Ensure transparency, accountability, & adherence to SAVMA’s standards and bylaws.
  • Facilitate committee meetings, set agendas, and steward decision-making processes.
  • Maintain shared-drive materials and institutional memory for leadership transition.
  • Manage the creation, coordination, & delivery of programs and learning events.
  • Oversee event timelines, vendor interactions, documentation, and volunteer assignments.
  • Ensure evaluation, data collection, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Oversee Awards, Volunteer Fair, and all recognition activities.
  • Manage budgets, sponsorships, vendor relationships, and event execution.
  • Ensure events reflect SAVMA’s mission and meet participation and revenue goals.
Required Qualifications:
  • Active membership in SAVMA with a commitment to its values
  • Working knowledge of the Volunteer Engagement Professional industry.
  • 3 years of board or committee experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5 years of board or committee experience
  • 3 years of VEP experience
